Record Container Ship Deliveries Expected in 2013
  Date:2012-10-19
Oct.19--Next year will see a record number of container ship deliveries, which will boost the global fleet by 9.5 percent.

Braemar’s latest Quarterly Container Ship Fleet Statistics forecasts vessels totaling 1.7 million 20-foot-equivalent units of capacity will join the fleet next year, 13 percent more than the record 1.5 million TEUs delivered in 2008. Some 1.3 million TEUs of capacity is estimated to join the fleet this year.

In the post-Panamax segment of vessels with more than 10,000 TEUs of capacity, 2013 deliveries will total 48 ships with a combined capacity of 650,000 TEUs.

Jonathan Roach, Braemar Seascope’s container analyst, said scrapping has helped to offset the growth in supply this year. “During the first three quarters of 2012, container ship demolition reached in excess of 220,000 TEUs and we estimate by the end of the year the TEU capacity scrapped will reach the 300,000-TEU level,” he said. “This represents the equivalent of approximately 2 percent of the Jan. 1, 2012, fleet.”
