Introduction of Belt and Road Shipping and Trade Index (BRSTI)

For the purpose of timely and comprehensively reflecting the achievements of "Belt and Road" initiative, especially the development results of smooth trade and transportation, Shanghai Shipping Exchange (SSE) researched and developed the Silk Road Freight and Trade Index (SRFTI) and Maritime Silk Road Freight Index (MFSI). After 2 years? trial run, by adjustment and optimization of index structure on the previous basis, SSE officially publishes the Belt and Road Shipping and Trade Index (BRSTI) in July, 2017, which consists of the Belt and Road Trade Value Index (BRTVI), Belt and Road Cargo Volume Index (BRCVI) and Maritime Silk Road Freight Index (SRFI).

1.Index Composition
The BRTVI, including one composite index and 8 component indices, covers 66 nations along the Belt and Road in North Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, Southeast Asia, West Asia, North Africa, Europe and Oceania. The BRCVI includes one composite index and 5 component indices which are China's export railway cargo volume to the nations along the Silk Road economy belt, China (Shanghai)?s export container volume to the nations on Silk Road at sea, China's import coal volume from the nations on Silk Road at sea, China's import iron ore volume from the nations on Silk Road at sea?China's import crude oil volume from the nations on Silk Road at sea and other regional sub-indices. The Belt cargo volume index shows the railway cargo volumes to the main nations and regions along the Belt such as Russia & Mongolia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Europe; the Road cargo volume index reflects the seaborne iron ore, coal, crude oil and container volumes to and from the nations on Silk Road such as Southeast Asia, West Asia, South Asia, Europe, Oceania and North Africa and etc.
SRFI includes one composite index and 4 component indices which are Maritime Silk Road Import Container Freight Index, Maritime Silk Road Export Container Freight Index, Maritime Silk Road Import Dry Bulk Freight Index, Maritime Silk Road Import Tanker Freight Index and other sub-indices. SRFI covers main cargoes and routes on Maritime Silk Road linking Asia, Africa and Europe.

2.Index Compilation
(1)Base period index Index takes January of 2015 as the base period with the base period index of 100 points. (2)Data sources The index is developed from the information collected and processed by SSE as well as other sources like SSE indices of CCFI, CICFI, CDFI, CTFI, etc. (3)Compilation Method 1) BRTVI Regional indices: 100×current period data÷base period data; Composite index: weighted calculation of regional indices 2) BRCVI Regional indices: 100×current period data÷base period data; Sub-indices: weighted calculation of regional indices; Composite index: weighted calculation of sub-indices 3) SRFI Routes indices: 100×current period data÷base period data; Sub-indices: weighted calculation of routes indices; Composite index: weighted calculation of sub-indices

3.Publication time
Index is publicized by SSE on the last Wednesday (working day) of each month. The date of publication will be adjusted in legal holidays. The latest indices are available on SSE official website.
If necessary and reasonable, SSE may postpone or cancel the publication.
