| Zhejiang's Zhoushan city continues to expand its vessel fleet |
| Jun.08--ZHOUSHAN, a city in eastern China's Zhejiang province, operated a fleet of 1,588 vessels at the end of April, growing 4.27 per cent compared to the same period in 2012, while total capacity of its fleet expanded 9.44 per cent to 5.16 million deadweight tonnes, Xinhua reports. There were 124 ships of more than 10,000 tonnes, up 1.64 per cent. Their deadweight tonnage totalled 2.72 million tonnes, up 7.46 per cent, account for 52.68 per cent of the total fleet tonnage. Specialised ship, including containerships, chemical carriers and oil tankers, grew 19.91 per cent to 530 vessels. Their aggregate tonnage rose 23.11 per cent to 1.15 million tonnes, accounting for 22.24 per cent of the total. Average deadweight tonnage of near-sea shipping vessels also increased 4.81 per cent to 32.44 million tonnes. Currently, there are 245 carriers in Zhoushan, of which 156 are common shipment carriers, 79 are oil carriers, 22 are chemical carriers, and 18 are passenger carriers. Zhoushan's vessel fleet, especially its bulk fleet, has been able to maintain a steady growth even though the bulk shipping market is still stagnant. Analysts said the short-lived recovery in 2009 enticed ship owners to build more bulk vessels and the delivery peak started in 2012 and will last through 2013. Also, the depressing market has hindered owners' plans to sell their ships. (Source:shippingazette) |
